About the Control Room

We take receipt of all 999 calls made to the Fire Service from within Bedfordshire, mobilise fire appliances, and see the incidents through to their conclusion. We facilitate any requests from the fireground and act as the critical communications hub between Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and external partners both locally, regionally, and nationally.

Control Firefighters are skilled in specialised call handling techniques to quickly assess situations and mobilise the right emergency crews. Using a variety of computerised systems, such as mapping, computer-aided dispatch, and web-based applications, we ensure efficient and effective responses.

Our team is also trained to identify callers in danger and provide life-saving instructions on how to protect themselves while waiting for fire crews to arrive. Join us and be a crucial part of a team that makes a real difference in emergency situations.

About the role and you

In the role, you will work in our Fire and Rescue Service Control Room. You will be responsible for receiving and acting upon emergency calls for assistance, directing fire appliances to incidents, and supporting Fire and Rescue Service operations and administrative processes.

You will have the ability to assimilate and retain information accurately while keeping calm under pressure. You must be over 18 years of age and hold 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A to C, including English Language, with a good standard of communication skills. You must have experience using computers, and the ability to input verbal information quickly and accurately using a keyboard is required.

Full training in all aspects of the role will be given.  If successful, you will be required to work with a small but highly dedicated team on a 42 hour week shift rota system involving day, night and weekend working.

You will be required to wear a uniform which is provided.

Group Manager Talent Pipeline 2025 – Temporary Development Opportunities

The Service is committed to the continual development of individuals seeking progression to the role of Group Manager, to support the Service’s future succession planning.

Driving Instructor

Can you support the next generation of fire engine drivers?

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue wants current, approved driving instructors (ADI) who have held their LGV/CAT C license for a minimum of three years to join its crucial and high-performing Driver Training Team.

Your role will be to train staff in driving a range of frontline vehicles from fire engines (using blue lights and sirens) to the safe operating of support vehicles such as fork lift trucks.

Ideally, you’ll have experience of emergency response, blue-light driving – but it’s not essential.

Working within our existing experienced Driver Training team, you will play an active role in developing novice and experienced drivers to a high standard of competency.

You’ll need to display high-levels of integrity and flexibility, demonstrate evidence of developing driver skills across a range of vehicles through one-to-one tuition and supporting training material. You’ll be training in everything from fork lift trucks and off-road vehicles, to Manitou and aerial fire appliances.

You’ll work a 9 day fortnight (5 days week one, then 4 days in week two), although for the first three months you may be asked to work Monday to Friday to assist in skill acquisition.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

1.     To provide effective, practical and theoretical driving tuition to all nominated staff including off-road techniques to standards acceptable to the requirements of the service and where appropriate to standards required by the Department of Transport and Qualified Driving Standards Agency examiners.

2.     To instruct and assess all nominated personnel, both theoretical and practical, to drive under emergency response conditions according to current guidance on Emergency Response Driving (ERD). This includes driving during the hours of darkness. To act as an ERD assessor and assess candidates to the required standards.

3.     To provide instruction, familiarisation and refresher training on all vehicles and appliances in use, or proposed for use, by the SYFR. This will include training on all forms of specialist appliance (Aerial/ Polaris etc.) and all associated equipment. To ensure that such training complies with recommendations of the Station Manager, the Fleet Manager, the recommendations of the vehicle supplier or manufacturer and to any approved codes of practice.

4.     To research, design and deliver driver training to achieve a high standard of delivery of emergency fire appliances to the scene of an emergency situation to all SYFR employees.

5.     To provide advice and support on all aspects of changes in driver training and road traffic laws including changes to European Community driving laws to the SYFR senior management team via the Line Manager.

6.    Arrange pre-assessments and make suitable arrangements for LGV medicals to be undertaken.  Programme and arrange training and development programmes as required by the organisation.

7.    Provide an organisational contact point for the Road Traffic Industrial Training Board (RTITB) or other Awarding Body and arrange and plan visits as and when required.

8.    Advise the organisations Corporate Management Board on matters regarding driving courses which fit with organisational objectives via the Line Manager.

9.     To be responsible for the accurate and appropriate maintenance and processing of training records and data, ensuring compliance with organisational policies and procedures (i.e. data protection).

10.  Complete daily routine safety checks and cleanliness of training vehicles.

11.  Work flexibly in relation to the needs of the post and the service including completing instructor training in hours of darkness (achieved 30 minutes after sunset).

12.  Maintain competence, gain additional skills and continually professionally develop by attending, when required, any training courses that will contribute to the effective performance of the post holder. This includes registering with the RTITB as an instructor and becoming an RTITB assessor. To assess and peer review other instructors both internally and regionally.

13.  To fully participate in SYFR’s Performance Development Review process according to the responsibilities of the role.

14.  To practice and promote SYFR’s Equality and Inclusion and Health and Safety Policies and to conduct oneself in a manner that is consistent with SYFR’s core values at all times.

15.  To ensure that risk is managed effectively within the section in accordance with corporate strategies and plans.

You will manage and support a team of BI Analysts, take ownership of the publication and visualisation of performance data, and lead on the analysis of key datasets that help the Brigade understand and improve its services.

You will also be responsible for external reporting to key stakeholders including the Home Office, His Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMICFRS) and the Greater London Authority. The role involves advising senior stakeholders, ensuring data quality standards are maintained, and contributing to key transformation projects.
